Environmental Feasibility Study
The Environmental Feasibility Study aims to identify possible restrictions for the implementation of a project, as well as evaluate the legal requirements applicable to the intended activity.
Through this study, it is possible to define the best location options for the project and ensure that the proposed development can be aligned with local environmental characteristics.
This study should be carried out during the project planning phase so that the entrepreneur has greater security in executing the activity. It is important to note that, in many cases, a project may be technically and economically feasible but not environmentally feasible, since there may be legal restrictions preventing its operation at the intended location.
Some examples of restrictions that may prevent the installation of a project include: incompatibility of the activity with municipal zoning regulations, the presence of environmental protection areas (APPs, Conservation Units, among others) within the property, scarcity of water resources, and environmental liabilities such as soil and groundwater contamination.
Evaluating all potentially restrictive factors is essential to provide security for the investment to be made by the entrepreneur. Therefore, the more relevant information about the project that is made available, the more accurate and efficient the environmental assessment will be.
The assessment may include identifying the environmental aspects and impacts of the project, allowing for the adoption of more effective control and mitigation measures. The prior identification of these factors may support decisions regarding which environmental studies will be required for project implementation, as well as which legal guidelines will apply to the activity.
This assessment can also support the environmental licensing process, since the entrepreneur will already be aware of the environmental requirements that must be met throughout all stages of the activity (planning, installation, and operation). Learn more about environmental licensing here.
In addition, the environmental agency’s analysis during the licensing process will benefit, since the necessary information will already have been gathered and provided by the entrepreneur, making the evaluation process much more agile.
